If you were stranded on a deserted island with four people, a couple of animals, and…

No seriously. A group of five divers was stranded on a remote Indonesian island for days after drifting for miles in shark-filled seas, clinging desperately to a log. Technically, they got lucky—the island was the last stop on the way out to the deep blue sea.

But it wasn’t rum punch and bikini-clad cookouts for this crew. They woke up their first morning to a visit from a 300-plus pound poisonous Komodo dragon, the world’s largest lizard found only in Indonesia. They scared him off by screaming and chucking rocks and sticks at him, then they spent two days scavenging for food, and trying to stay alive.

The surrounding sea, where the Indian and Pacific Oceans meet, is known for its tumultuous tides and unpredictable current. Only experienced divers are advised to go there. The group was spotted—waving madly from shore—by rescuers aboard a nearby boat.
