This could be TMI, so I apologize in advance ....
I was diving on Friday and Saturday. I flew back home on an airplane on Monday morning.
Just before I had the most severe nose bleed I have ever had. I thought I was hemmoraging (sp??). All I had done was to blow my nose. Not too hard. But as soon as I did, the tissue was covered in blood, and the bleeding didn't stop for a good 5 minutes. And the flow of blood was pretty heavy (for the nose at least).
Could this have anything to do with the dives? Could it be a sinus squeeze with a delayed reaction?

Re: SEVERE nose bleed
Wed, February 13, 2008 - 2:14 PMI'm not sure how experienced you are with diving. It's incredibly common for people to get nosebleeds when they first start diving, just because they're not properly equalizing. That's anecdotal, not a medical fact. I don't think there's such a thing as a delayed sinus squeeze. I had a sinus barotrauma last year and it's something you notice because there is incredible pain. It felt like a combination sinus headache and icepick to the area above my left eye. When I surfaced and took off my mask, it was full of blood that had come out my nose. The bleeding happens immediately.
Did you experience any pain when you were diving? You are probably fine, but if you have recurring pain or bleeding you should get checked out. -

Re: SEVERE nose bleed
Wed, February 13, 2008 - 3:32 PMNo pain or anything unusual while diving.
It may be completely unrelated to the dive. It's winter ... dry air in the office, in the apartment, on the plane. That's what the DAN medical person I spoke to thought it probably was about. -

Re: SEVERE nose bleed
Wed, February 13, 2008 - 4:11 PMId probably get it checked out.
I often get nosebleeds after diving, also sometimes a day or so later. Ive never been to concerned by them as its not a regular thing and is never painful.

Re: SEVERE nose bleed
Wed, February 13, 2008 - 7:54 PMLisa, I would contact DAN and see what they say. They really are a great resource for diving medical stuff. While regular doctors can help they sometimes can miss something if it's diving related.
go to www.diversalertnetwork.org/
Hope this helps,

Re: SEVERE nose bleed
Wed, February 13, 2008 - 8:44 PMI was diving for 10 years before I got my first nose bleed. It was really minimal... a tiny bit of blood upon surfacing. No biggy. The cause... likely due to the minor cold I had. I was taking oral decongestant (approved by DAN first) but that caused excessive drying out of the sinus cavity which was the actual cause of the bleeding which stopped immediately. It is the amount of bleeding that would concern me. Are you taking blood thinners for any reason? Also... if you are taking birth control pills they can sometimes cause nose bleeds. In conjunction with a dive where the assent was a little quicker than recommended... gush. If you are on ANY type of meds check the literature for possible side effects.
