I took a cattle boat to the Blue Hole in Belize, as it was the only boat going out from Caye Caulker that day.
A skinny kid wearing no wetsuit weighed himself down with about 30 lbs of lead.
Naturally, when we got to the stopping point at a depth of 130 feet, he kept going.
He descended to 160 feet before he stopped and began to ascend.
Newbie diver. Couldn't understand why he could not control his descent. Was complaining he did not have enough lead!
A few more pounds and he would have gone to the bottom and stayed there. With that much weight, he was near the maximum lift of his BC.
By dumb luck, he did not get bent, at least not that day. Who knows what became of him by evening? Only thing that saved him is that it was a short dive, plus he was young and skinny. If he had been old and fat, he'd a been bent for sure.
Friggin' cattle boats. Who the hell gave a bean pole of a kid in no neoprene 30 lbs of lead to put in his BC?

Re: cattle boat
Fri, November 14, 2008 - 11:53 AMWow - i don't even wear that much lead in Monterey with a 7 mm full, 5/3 hooded vest, gloves and booties - and I would float like a cork and probably weigh more than the kid.
Sheesh, that really bothers me when you head stories like that - way to dangerous.

Re: cattle boat
Fri, November 14, 2008 - 1:09 PMyeah, 8 to 10 lbs is all the lead I need in warm salt water with a 3mil suit.
Fresh water, I don't need any lead at all until winter time. In winter I dive in a 7 mil and need about 4 lbs with an alum 80 and a pony bottle.
With a steel LP 95, I never need any lead even in winter.
