Hi, all. This is pretty far in advance, but I'm looking for a place to take my advanced open water certification in November. I'd like to go somewhere within an easy flight of the SF Bay area, but with warm water and pretty reefs (ie, not Monterey). Perhaps Baja?
Anyone have any area/dive shop recommendations?

Re: nearby advanced open water
Wed, March 12, 2008 - 2:04 PMWhat about SE Florida or the Keys? I've done trips (not classes) with Lighthouse Dive Shop (Ft. Lauderdale), South Florida Diving Headquarters and enjoyed both of them. In the Keys I've dealt with InnerSpace Dive Center (Big Pine Key) and Silent World (Key Largo) and Conch Republic (Tavernier). You can generally get direct flights, even some red eyes (my favorites when heading east) on American and sometimes JetBlue into Miami or Ft. Lauderdale.

Wed, March 12, 2008 - 2:30 PMI like Belize. That might be stretching the definition of "nearby", tho'. -

Re: nearby advanced open water
Wed, March 12, 2008 - 2:42 PMThe only problem that I would have with going outside of the country for training would be the potential language barrier. It would be imperative (for me) to ensure that I have a fluent English speaker. That is, to me, one of the best reasons for FL (hence my suggestion). -

Wed, March 12, 2008 - 2:54 PMAnother good one for Belize: English is the official language. -

Re: nearby advanced open water
Wed, March 12, 2008 - 8:31 PMnot technically 'nearby', but it's part of the US: Hawaii.
With the dollar so low, it seems a shame to go abroad right now. -

Re: nearby advanced open water
Thu, March 13, 2008 - 10:40 AMThe problem with staying in the US is that we're actually planning on going over thanksgiving - and I don't know whether dive shops are operational then. That's why we were thinking Baja - combo of not in the US and close. -

Re: nearby advanced open water
Thu, March 13, 2008 - 10:41 AMAnd, of course, not that Hawaii's cheap, regardless of the value of the dollar. -

Re: nearby advanced open water
Thu, March 13, 2008 - 10:48 AMHm. I think that there might be dive shops open around Thanksgiving, especially if you plan in advance. I've done dive trips (US-based), etc. over Thanksgiving. There are enough people who aren't interested in doing the family thing to fill a live-aboard. :-)

Re: nearby advanced open water
Thu, March 13, 2008 - 7:45 PMOne thing I was just looking up is the possibility of doing a referral for this course so you don't have to spend time in the classroom while in paradise. And you can do this. I'd suggest finding a place, calling them to make sure they accept referrals, figure out what three adventure dives they'll let you do besides the navigation and deep diving which you have to do, then getting the book work done here. It's just a thought so you can spend more time in the water rather than in a classroom. Good luck! -

Re: nearby advanced open water
Fri, March 14, 2008 - 10:38 AMWe had two nights of classroom and pool time for our SSI AOW course. -

Re: nearby advanced open water
Fri, March 14, 2008 - 11:57 AMIm a great believer in doing boring courses at home although as youve pointed out the AOW is more practical than academic, even if it does mean spending a cold weekend down at Monterey.
I did my advanced many years ago diving a flooded quarry not far from Leicester in the middle of December.......Yep! it was miserable, although it made me appreciate all the more diving the Red Sea a week later. I also did my Rescue in December diving a dank lake not far from Heathrow Airport just before another winter trip to the Red Sea.
I just want to maximize my away time doing my own thing, although of course this is just my take on training.
I believe theres many different kinds of divers all looking for different things. I personally look to enjoy different cultures and outlooks whilst traveling and diving and tend to head to less developed destinations where ones money also stretches further, and ones experience is enhanced by the feeling of being away from ones comfort zone.
I dont remember to many post on diving or training in Baja on this tribe, although it does sound like an interesting destination.
The obvious would be the Utilla, which i enjoyed in ways. Belize which I found to be quite un-organized and the Cozumel which looks like a parking lot for American cruise ships. Another not so visited destination is the Corn Islands, Nicaragua.
Happy diving -

This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.
Re: nearby advanced open water
Sat, March 15, 2008 - 10:05 AMThere is some classroom work, not too much though. As a completely shameless plug for myself, I'd be happy to do this with you, but also happy to refer you to someone as well as there are some good teachers around. I wholeheartedly agree with what grahamez said about maximizing fun-time while away. But not all dive shops will accept referrals, even though they're supposed to, I think.
