Wed, May 28, 2008 - 9:08 PMwow...frightening. An instructor I worked with recently shared how he keeps an old cd in his bcd pocket. It can be used to signal using the sun and apparently is a good conductor for radar. In some ways I thought this was overkill but if these folks weren't found with both a safety sausage and a whistle, both which I always have on me, then this little cd doesn't seem so superfluous at all. -

Re: Lost at sea
Sat, May 31, 2008 - 4:04 PMYeah, it was the Aggressor fleet.
I felt very safe with them. They kept things fun, but were very serious about safety.
When we forgot to sign the boards saying we were either going in the water or getting out, we got scolded ALOT!!!

Re: Lost at sea
Sat, June 7, 2008 - 3:15 PMI believe most diving operations keep things safe, although I always check out who Im diving with and how they deal with rescue situations. The electronic makers are a good idea, although very costly and I dont see them being used by many operators in the near future. Im just wondering if Aggressor use them because their an American based operator and fear high cost legal action against themselves?
As far as saftey sausages or surface maker bouys as I call them are concerned, Ive known for sometime that the high viz yellow is more visible than the traditional high viz red variety. All British divers use them, in fact you wont get on a boat without one.
Having seen a few incidents over the years Im convinced that things will go wrong and divers will get lost. Ive always planned to stay together and keep calm and positive should it ever happen to me.
The cd idea is a good one, they can usually be bought from any internet cafe overseas for about 50 c.
These guys here went missing a few days ago and where recovered today. Im not sure if Id have preffered to have been bobbing about in the sea rather than fighting off Komodo Dragons. www.guardian.co.uk/world/20...indonesia -

Re: Lost at sea
Sat, June 7, 2008 - 5:17 PMthanks for the link, Grahmex. I'd heard about that on the radio, but hadn't seen the article yet.
And I believe Aggressor uses the electronic devices, not because they cater to litigious americans, but because they're such an expensive operator, and they can afford it. They paid a lot of attention to detail. I didn't really need all the pastries and the turndown service, but that attention to detail was equally true under water, which I did appreciate.
